Book Review//One Dark Throne

One Dark Throne by Kendare Blake

Goodreads Synopsis:

The battle for the Crown has begun, but which of the three sisters will prevail?

With the unforgettable events of the Quickening behind them and the Ascension Year underway, all bets are off. Katharine, once the weak and feeble sister, is stronger than ever before. Arsinoe, after discovering the truth about her powers, must figure out how to make her secret talent work in her favor without anyone finding out. And Mirabella, once thought to be the strongest sister of all and the certain Queen Crowned, faces attacks like never before—ones that put those around her in danger she can’t seem to prevent.

My Thoughts

This book was slow to start, I had to read a chapter and then put the book down. I knew that I had to keep going to get to the “good bits” which did not disappoint! The ending blew me away. As soon as I finished this novel I went and ordered the next books in this series along with the novella that Blake wrote. I’m still waiting on the last book to be in paperback (I have a thing where I need the books to match if I bought the first book in paperback the rest need to be in that format as well).

I loved seeing how each Queen came into her own during this book, how each of them are different yet how they still seem so normal. I rooted for each one, but Katharine and Mirabella were the ones that I was most interested in. Arisone‘s character didn’t hold my attention and I kept wanting to go back to what Katharine or Mirabella were doing.

The dynamic between Arisone and Mirabella were written wonderfully, I loved Arisonoe’s friendship with Jules. Katharine is… I have no words for her. I wrote her off in the first book as being too much of a pushover, as being weak but in this book she has redeemed herself! I love dark complex characters and Katharine roughly fits this, I would have loved to see a darker side of her if that’s at all possible. I wish that there was more explanation of what happened to Katharine at the end of Three Dark Crowns, I want more details about Katharine. Her character development in the book was well executed; all of their developments were tactfully done.

If there’s one character that I disliked it would be Joseph. I kept rolling my eyes whenever he made an appearance same with Billy, I think I literally cringed whenever they made an appearance on the page. I couldn’t stand them and I can’t figure out why at this moment.

Overall I enjoyed this novel, I wish that there was more details about Katharine and less Joseph and Billy which is why I gave this book 4/5 cups of tea. Writing this review about One Dark Throne makes me want to read the next one right now! Which is what I’m going to do. I’m sad that I was so late to reading these books, if only I had known about them sooner!
